Let’s take a look at the last edition of the Chevy Cruze

Quick notes

The Chevy Cruze has been discontinued and is available at discount pricing.

It is a subcompact available in a hatchback or sedan version across five trim levels.

It has decent spacing for passengers and cargo on the sedan version, but will never replace a right SUV.

The Chevy Cruze pricing starts at $17,995, but with the discontinuance, some buyers are reporting a 10-20 percent savings on the price. If you’re in the market for a new car, this may be a great place to start!

The Chevy Cruze is available with either a gas or diesel engine. Experts prefer the diesel but indicate that the gas savings may not be worth the additional cost to get it. The gas engine is a 4-cylinder 1.4L outputting 153hp. This comes with a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission and AWD. Gas mileage is a decent 28MPG in the city and 38MPG on the highway.

The Chevy Cruze is a lower-priced subcompact to the small sedan and competes directly with the Honda Civic, Kia Forte, and Mazda 3, so the standard features are not a panoramic sunroof, but you’ll survive with the options available for the price.

Some of the features included are four-wheel ABS, post-collision safety system, tire pressure monitor, traction control, USB inputs with external media control, 4-month speaker sound system, air conditioning, heated mirrors, and all-weather floor liners. The base model is very basic. It is recommended to upgrade at least one level up.

The Chevy Cruze comes in 5 standard colors of black, gray, silver, burgundy, and white. This complements the sole two interior colors of gray and black. At least you know the seats won’t stain if the kids, or your friends, get crazy in the back.

The interior features your standard 6-way manual driver seat adjustments, bucket front seats, with folding rear seats (all fabric).

The exterior is rounded out with fog lights, a chrome accent grille,  15″ or 17″ aluminum wheels with tires. That we need to note that the car comes with tires should be a good indication that you are not in the luxury class.

That’s not to say that the Chevy Cruze isn’t a decent car, more be aware to manage your expectations and that everything you like on the car may be considered an upgrade (and therefore, more money).

Is the Chevy Cruze an alternative to an SUV?

Absolutely not. If you are purchasing an SUV, you are likely purchasing it for specific reasons. Perhaps you ski and want your gear inside instead of up top on a rack. Perhaps you need to tow your trailer or boat. The Chevy Cruze isn’t towing anything more than a small UHaul trailer.

That’s not to say that it’s a bad car or not a value purchase, because with the current discounts it most certainly is.

The trend is generally towards electronic vehicles, crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. The Chevy Cruze is a subcompact sedan. The sedan version does have a full-sized trunk, so it is quite suitable still for shopping, taking the kids places, and bringing your work materials to and from work.

Reviews

The Chevy Cruze gets an average of 4.2/5 stars ratings from its drivers. Almost all say the car is better than it seems and what reviewers indicate. For the price, it has decent features, nice upgradable options, and nice safety features.

The price was decent before, but the discontinuance is very competitive and you’d be hard-pressed to find a crossover or SUV for a similar price. It seems to be the most popular with younger drivers.
