Genesis’ luxury car long game is working
Who is Genesis?
Genesis is the new luxury offering owned by parent company Hyundai Motor Company. The first concept car was introduced in 2007, but the Genesis brand didn’t become its own company until 2015.
Hyundai is a South Korean automotive company that entered the North American automotive market with bare-bones offerings. They were considered better quality than the initial Kia offerings, but barely. In the 90s you could walk out of the dealership with a brand new car for $5,000 or less. It wouldn’t have power steering or air conditioning, but this is a less than $5,000 car we’re talking about.
Hyundai Motor Company entered the luxury car market with a head of design that previously worked at Bentley and Lamborghini, Luc Donckerwolfe. You know that Hyundai was determined that their luxury brand be focused on luxury.

The original Genesis started as a Hyundai car before being launched into its own brand. The cars are not well known due to newness and lack of dealerships. That’s going to change over the next several years as millennials and more cost-conscious luxury lovers look for less expensive, but quality built products.

Genesis has a range of cars, and other upcoming products slated for the next few years. They’ve only been in business for a few years but already have an impressive lineup.
The smallest, and possibly one of the likely top sellers depending on the initial price point, is the Mini Concept. The Mini Concept is hot and totally something any millennial or even their parent would drive. It’s electric so perfect for city driving. It’s small, sleek, and looks expensive. But the price doesn’t scream “I’m going to go broke maintaining this and will eventually have to live in my car.”

Their other models, the G70, G80, and G90 are all generally highly rated sedans. The Genesis G70 is their introductory model. With a base starting price of $35,450, there’s a lot to look forward to. The next level up is the Genesis G80 which has a base starting price of $42,550. The Genesis G80 rates number two in luxury midsize cars by U.S. News and World Report. The highest level sedan offering is the Genesis G90 has a base starting price of $69,350. It scores a remarkable 10/10 for safety. It has a general overall rating of 8.4/10 which is excellent. It also finishes at the top of its class.
The overall styling of the brand is nice and the cars look expensive. The ratings of the cars tend to be quite high, especially for new entrants to the market.
A concept electrical Mini and sedan line are not the extent of Genesis’ offerings though. A new SUV, the Genesis GV80 is a luxury sports utility slated to hit the streets soon. As of now, there is not much information available.
In 2022 an update to the brand line is expected with the introduction of two crossovers and a sports couple. We’re looking forward to seeing these new additions and test driving some of them.
