The Cadillac XT4, not your average Cadillac

Quick notes

– The 2020 Cadillac XT4 gets mixed reviews

– Cadillac is known for its smooth, sweet, quiet ride. The XT4 not so much

– Cadillac fans will still appreciate what the XT4 has to offer. Despite mixed reviews, it’s still worth a test drive and purchase consideration.

The 2020 Cadillac XT4 has an MSRP starting at $35,695. The fully loaded option comes in at $47,890. The XT4 is considered a subcompact crossover. But, if your idea of a subcompact crossover is a Kia Soul, this will be the equivalent of a full-sized SUV for you. All trim models feature a 2.0L 4-cylinder 237hp turbocharged engine with a 9-speed transmission on FWD powertrain. AWD is an option.

The Cadillac comes with features standard to most luxury crossover such as turn signal mirrors, stability control, tire pressure monitoring, 4 wheel ABS, pre-collision warning system and post-collision safety system, driver assist, speed-sensitive volume control, USB connections, leather steering wheel, rearview camera, heated mirrors, and navigation.

The 2020 Cadillac XT4 is offered in nine paint colors with three neutral color interior packages. The orange exterior paint looks particularly sharp. Wheels are a 20″ split seven-spoke alloy with Midnight Metallic finish with an all-season tire.  The suspension is four-wheel independent.

Expert Reviews

Experts give the 2020 Cadillac XT4 mixed reviews. Edmunds gives it a 6.9/10 rating. Meh.

The pros are that the XT4 is spacious with sufficient cargo sizing for its class, infotainment is pleasing to the eye and speedy. The seating and interior comfort are what Cadillac drivers would be used to. No complaints about the seats, headrest or armrest position.

The Cadillac XT4 has a high safety rating with 5 out of 5 stars being given by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The XT4 incorporates a lot of safety features that make this crossover particularly suitable for those who may find themselves a bit distracted on the road with kids or business calls and such, or teenagers.

Anyone who drives a Cadillac knows that the name is not synonymous with fuel efficiency. The XT4 features a combined MPG of 24 which is not horrific but isn’t great either.

The cons, that sweet silent Cadillac ride you’re used to, it’s marred by engine noise. AND road noise. This is soo not Cadillac. I’m wondering if the expert reviewers were provided lemons. This is so far from anything Cadillac is known for.

Some experts have indicated that some controls can be difficult to use. Cadillacs tend to offer a lot of interior accessories and mastering them does require perusing the manual.

In terms of pricing, most of the luxury features you’d expect to be standard, are optional on this model. Likely due to the low starting price to get people who want to upgrade from GMC to Cadillac actually INTO the Cadillac.

Along with the lack of a sweet quiet ride, the engine power and handling don’t get great reviews.

Driver Reviews

Cadillac drivers tend to be loyal so they may be more willing to overlook some ‘quirks’ the expert reviewers might not. At the time of writing, there were no owner reviews for the 2020 Cadillac XT4.

Checking the reviews from the 2019 Cadillac XT4 show the same mixed reviews as the experts for the 2020 version, but for different reasons. Cadillac tends to take driver experience seriously and has likely addressed all the issues complained of, but the XT4 is definitely something that needs to be test driven by the person intending to drive the car. The XT4 tends to suit a particular type of driver and it’s not necessarily the Cadillac model you’d spring on someone without an individual test drive.

You need to drive this one for yourself and see if it meets your specific needs and priorities.
